Planning an artificial grass project

How should I choose artificial grass?

Consider how the area will be used, the appearance you prefer and how
much foot traffic the surface will receive.

  • Pile height:
Influences the appearance and feel of the finished surface.
  • Density:
Affects how full and substantial the grass appears.
  • Colour:
Mixed shades can create a more natural-looking finish.
  • Intended use:
Check that the selected product suits the planned location.
How much artificial grass will I need?

Measure the maximum length and width of the complete area. Divide
irregular gardens into simple rectangles and calculate each section
separately.

Allow additional material for trimming, shaped edges, joins and keeping
the pile direction consistent. Confirm the available roll width before
planning the cutting layout.

Planning the pile direction

Artificial grass fibres naturally lean in one direction. For the most
consistent appearance, install every piece with the pile running the
same way.

The grass will often appear fuller when the pile faces the main viewing
position, such as the house or patio.

Preparing the ground

Remove existing grass, vegetation, roots and unsuitable soft material.
Excavate far enough to accommodate the complete base, finishing layer
and artificial grass.

Check for cables, pipes and drainage before digging. The prepared area
should be stable and set to the required finished levels.

Creating a suitable sub-base

Artificial grass requires a firm, stable and free-draining foundation.
The required aggregate, depth and preparation depend on the ground
conditions and installation system.

Install and compact the specified sub-base in suitable layers. Poor
preparation may lead to settlement, uneven areas or drainage problems.

Drainage requirements

Water must be able to drain through or away from the finished area.
Avoid creating low points where rainwater can collect beneath the
artificial grass.

Waterlogged ground, heavy clay and enclosed areas may require
additional drainage preparation before installation.

Will I need a weed membrane?

A suitable membrane may be included within the installation to help
separate materials and reduce unwanted growth.

Its position depends on the base system and intended use. Follow the
artificial-grass manufacturer’s installation guidance.

Joining separate pieces

Position adjoining pieces with their pile running in the same direction.
Trim the backing carefully so the edges meet without overlapping.

Use a compatible joining tape and adhesive system. Keep fibres clear of
the adhesive and follow its curing instructions before using the area.

Cutting artificial grass

Cut carefully from the backing side using a sharp, suitable knife.
Make smaller controlled cuts around curves, posts and fixed garden
features.

Wear cut-resistant gloves where appropriate and keep hands away from
the cutting direction.

Securing the edges

Stable edging helps hold the grass in position and creates a neat
boundary against paving, planting areas and garden features.

Choose an edging and fixing method compatible with the ground, base and
artificial-grass system.

Installing around trees and plants

Leave appropriate space around tree trunks and growing plants. Do not
restrict natural trunk growth or cover areas that need access to water
and air.

Remember that roots and trunks may increase in size and affect the
surrounding surface over time.

Is artificial grass suitable for pets?

Check that the selected product and installation system are suitable
for pets. Effective drainage is particularly important where animals
regularly use the area.

Remove waste promptly and clean the surface using products approved for
the artificial grass and safe for animals.

Heat, barbecues and fire

Artificial grass can become hot in strong sunlight and may be damaged
by high temperatures. Keep barbecues, fire pits and other heat sources
away from the surface.

Take care with reflective glass or metal objects that may concentrate
sunlight onto one area.

Looking after artificial grass

Remove leaves and debris regularly and brush the pile with suitable
equipment to help keep the fibres upright.

Clean spills promptly using methods approved by the manufacturer.
Avoid harsh chemicals and tools that could damage the fibres or backing.
