Choosing nails and staples

Should I use nails or staples?
  • Nails:
Commonly used for joining timber components and attaching
    suitable fencing materials.
  • Staples:
Commonly used to secure fencing wire, netting and mesh to timber
    posts or rails.

The correct choice will depend on the materials being joined, the
forces placed on the fixing and the installation method.

Choosing the correct size

Select a fixing with a suitable length and thickness for the
materials being connected. It should provide enough penetration
to hold securely without passing unnecessarily through the
supporting timber.

Thicker or heavier materials may require a larger fixing. Always
check the product specification before installation.

Fixings for outdoor projects

Fencing fixings are regularly exposed to moisture and changing
weather. Select a finish suitable for outdoor use and compatible
with the timber or material being installed.

Coastal locations, treated timber and particularly exposed sites
may require additional corrosion resistance. Check the fixing
manufacturer’s guidance when choosing.

Staples for wire and mesh

Staples can be used to attach suitable wire fencing, stock fencing
and netting to timber posts and rails. Drive them firmly enough to
retain the wire without crushing it or preventing necessary
movement.

Use the correct staple size and spacing for the wire type, fence
design and expected load.

How many fixings will I need?

Calculate the number of fixing points across the complete project,
including every panel, rail, board, post or section of mesh. Allow
a small additional quantity for dropped fixings, adjustments and
future repairs.

Installation and safety

Wear suitable eye protection and gloves when handling or installing
nails and staples. Check that the workpiece is supported securely
and keep hands away from the fixing point.

If using powered or pneumatic equipment, only use compatible
fixings and follow the tool manufacturer’s instructions.
