Buying information
Wall fixings can be used to attach suitable components to brick,
block, concrete and other masonry surfaces.
The correct fixing depends on the wall material, condition of the
surface, item being attached and forces placed on the connection.
A fixing suitable for solid brick may not be appropriate for hollow
block or damaged masonry.
Check the fixing manufacturer’s recommended base material and load
information before installation.
Allow for the thickness of the timber, bracket or fitting being
installed as well as the required embedment into the wall.
The fixing diameter must suit both the intended load and any
pre-drilled holes in the component. Always use the specified drill
bit size.
Inspect the wall for loose bricks, damaged blocks, cracks or weak
mortar before drilling. Wall fixings rely on a sound supporting
material to perform correctly.
Avoid relying on weak mortar joints unless the selected fixing and
installation specification expressly permit it.
Select fixings with a finish suitable for outdoor use. Moisture,
changing weather and contact with treated timber may affect the
required level of corrosion resistance.
Coastal or particularly exposed sites may require a higher-grade
fixing. Refer to the product specification before purchasing.
Mark the fixing points carefully and check for electrical cables,
water pipes and other hidden services before drilling.
Drill to the recommended diameter and depth, clear dust from the
hole and install the fixing according to the manufacturer’s
instructions. Avoid overtightening.
Heavy gates, tall fencing and structures exposed to strong wind can
place considerable force on a wall. Confirm that both the fixing
and supporting structure are suitable for the expected load.
Seek advice from a suitably qualified installer or engineer if the
wall condition or required fixing capacity is uncertain.
