Type 1 MOT is a graded crushed aggregate containing a mixture of larger
particles and fine material. When correctly installed and compacted,
the smaller particles fill the spaces between the larger pieces.

This creates a dense supporting layer beneath an appropriate finished
surface.

Type 1 MOT is primarily intended as a supporting sub-base rather than a
decorative finished surface. Its mixture of larger particles and fines
is selected for compaction rather than appearance.

The appropriate paving, gravel, asphalt or other specified surface is
normally installed above it.

Measure the area’s length and width and multiply these by the required
finished compacted depth. Ensure that every measurement has been
converted into the same unit.

Converting this volume into tonnes requires the approximate bulk
density of the aggregate. Allow for compaction, ground variation and a
sensible amount of additional material.

The required compacted depth depends on the existing ground, drainage,
finished surface and expected loading. A pedestrian path will not
necessarily require the same construction as a vehicle area.

Follow the requirements of the chosen surface system and obtain
professional advice for heavily loaded or structurally important work.

Excavate to the required level and remove vegetation, topsoil, soft
material and debris. The formation beneath the aggregate should be
stable and prepared to the correct levels and falls.

Identify underground cables, drainage and pipes before excavation
begins.

A suitable geotextile membrane may be specified between soft ground and
the aggregate. This can help keep the sub-base separate from the soil
beneath it.

The correct membrane and installation method depend on the ground
conditions and complete surface design.

Spread the material evenly across the prepared area. Deeper sub-bases
may need to be installed and compacted in separate layers rather than
placing the full depth at once.

Compact each layer using suitable equipment and check the levels
regularly before the next part of the installation is added.

Loose aggregate reduces in depth when compacted. Quantity calculations
should therefore be based on the required finished compacted depth,
with an appropriate allowance for this reduction.

Uneven excavation may also increase the amount of material needed.

Set the sub-base levels so the completed surface drains safely. Avoid
directing water towards buildings, timber structures or neighbouring
properties.

Include the depth of the bedding layer and finished surface when
calculating the required excavation and sub-base level.

Excessively wet or waterlogged ground can make preparation and
compaction difficult. The supporting formation should be stable enough
to work on without becoming heavily disturbed.

Protect the prepared area from contamination and standing water until
the finished surface is installed.

Loose aggregate requires a suitable tipping area that is firm,
accessible and large enough to contain the complete load.

Tell us about narrow roads, parked vehicles, overhead cables, soft
ground or restricted access before delivery is arranged.

Loose aggregate can be loaded into an appropriate truck or tipper at
the depot. The collecting vehicle must be suitable for the weight and
quantity being purchased.

Do not exceed the vehicle’s permitted payload or rely on an unsuitable
domestic vehicle or trailer.

Store the aggregate on a clean and stable surface where it cannot block
roads, pavements, drains or access routes.

Keep it separate from soil, waste and other aggregates to prevent
contamination before use.

Wear suitable gloves, protective footwear and eye protection when
moving and spreading aggregate. Control dust and use suitable
respiratory protection where required.

Use appropriate mechanical equipment and safe working methods when
handling larger quantities.
