Choosing paint and stain for garden timber

Should I use paint or stain?
  • Timber paint:
Provides a more noticeable colour change and can create a more
    uniform finished appearance.
  • Timber stain:
Colours the timber while usually allowing more of its natural
grain and character to remain visible.

Always check that the selected product is suitable for the surface,
previous coating and intended outdoor use.

Preparing the timber

Good preparation helps the finish apply evenly and adhere correctly.
The timber should be sound, clean and sufficiently dry before work
begins.

  • Remove loose paint, dirt, algae and surface debris.
  • Replace or repair badly damaged timber where necessary.
  • Allow recently cleaned or wet timber to dry.
  • Protect nearby walls, paving, plants and metal fittings.
Can I paint pressure-treated timber?

Pressure-treated timber may contain moisture when newly supplied.
It should be allowed to dry sufficiently before applying paint or
stain.

Drying time varies with the timber, treatment and weather. Follow
the coating manufacturer’s instructions and test a small area if
you are uncertain.

How much paint or stain will I need?

Measure the total surface area and compare it with the coverage
information shown on the product. Remember to include both sides,
edges, posts and any additional timber components being coated.

Rough or absorbent timber may use more product, and multiple coats
may be required. Allow a little extra for touch-ups and future
maintenance.

Brush, roller or sprayer?
  • Brush:
Provides control around edges, joints and detailed areas.
  • Roller:
Can make covering broad, flat timber surfaces quicker.
  • Sprayer:
May cover large areas efficiently when the coating is approved
    for spray application.

Follow the product instructions and use only compatible application
equipment.

Choosing suitable weather

Apply exterior coatings in suitable dry conditions and within the
temperature range stated by the manufacturer. Avoid painting when
rain, frost or heavy condensation is expected before the coating
can dry.

Strong direct sunlight and very hot timber may also cause some
coatings to dry too quickly.

Colour and test areas

The final colour may vary according to the timber species, previous
coatings, surface texture and number of coats applied.

Test the product on a small, less visible area and allow it to dry
fully before coating the complete surface.

Ongoing timber maintenance

Inspect painted or stained timber regularly for fading, peeling,
cracking or exposed areas. Clean and recoat it according to the
product manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.

Pay particular attention to cut ends, joints and areas that remain
damp for longer periods.

Application and storage safety

Read the product label before use and wear the recommended
protective equipment. Keep coatings away from children, animals,
ponds and watercourses.

Store containers securely and dispose of leftover product,
contaminated materials and empty packaging according to the label
and local disposal guidance.
