If you are planning a new fence in Hertford, Harlow, or the surrounding Hertfordshire/Essex area, one of the most common questions is: “How long do my concrete posts actually need to be?”

Getting the height right isn’t just about the look; it’s about the structural integrity of your boundary. At 414 Fencing, we supply everything from 5ft to 12ft dry cast concrete posts. Here is our expert guide to choosing the correct size.

The Golden Rule: The 2ft Rule

For a standard, secure garden fence, the general rule of thumb is that at least 2ft (600mm) of the post should be underground.

Why we recommend 2ft in the ground: “At 414 Fencing, we advise that a minimum of 2ft (600mm) of your concrete post should be set into the ground. Whether you are in a sheltered garden in Hertford or a more open space in Harlow, this 2ft depth provides the essential leverage needed to keep your fence upright.

Using an 8ft post for a 6ft fence is the industry standard because it gives you exactly 72 inches of ‘slot’ to slide in your gravel board and panel, leaving a solid 24 inches to be encased in concrete. This balance ensures your fence remains sturdy without requiring you to dig unnecessarily deep holes.”

Pro Tip: If you are using a concrete gravel board at the base of your panel, don’t forget to factor that into your total “above ground” height!

When should you go longer (10ft – 12ft)?

Sometimes, the “2ft Rule” isn’t enough. Here are three scenarios where our 10ft, 11ft, or 12ft posts are essential:

  1. Sloping Ground: If your garden in Harlow or Hertford isn’t level, you will need to “step” your panels. This often leaves one side of the post needing more length to remain securely in the ground.
  2. High Wind Areas: For exposed gardens or industrial sites, burying the post 3ft deep provides significantly more resistance against the British weather.
  3. Security: For 7ft or 8ft high security perimeters, our 11ft and 12ft posts ensure the boundary is immovable.

Why Choose Dry Cast Concrete?

All our intermediate posts are dry cast. This means they are compacted under high pressure, resulting in a clean, matte finish that is:

  • Easier to handle: Slightly lighter than wet cast, making them a favourite for trade contractors in Hertfordshire.
  • Uniform Look: A consistent texture that matches standard residential fencing perfectly.
  • Rot-Proof: Unlike timber, these will never decay, providing a permanent solution for your home.

Looking to do a fencing job near Harlow. Will be ordering the 12ft posts with taller panels which I was told you can manufacture. Cheers.
